A simple ATM run turned into tragedy on the wet roads of Philippi. A 39‑year‑old woman, sent by her boyfriend to withdraw money at the Junxion Mall, lost her life when she was struck by a speeding taxi on Tuesday, 5 August along Govan Mbeki Road.

She was walking in the yellow lane, a safe space by design, when the taxi—which witnesses said was moving at high speed on slippery roads—collided with her from behind, killing her instantly. Her friend, walking just ahead, narrowly escaped the same fate.

According to family, she hadn’t even reached the mall when paramedics tried to revive her... too late. The driver was reportedly overtaking another vehicle in dangerous conditions.

Cape Town police confirmed the case as culpable homicide. Lieutenant‑Colonel Malcolm Pojie stated the accident occurred at around 8:47 AM, and the woman was declared dead on the scene. An investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made.

While investigators piece together the events, residents are demanding change. A local man voiced frustration:

“These taxi drivers are reckless—they put lives at risk every day. There must be stricter road safety enforcement.”

For many, this is not an isolated tragedy but part of a worrying pattern: Philippi and surrounding areas have seen multiple fatal incidents involving taxis, from shootings at ranks to fatal collisions. Commuters say they’re trapped between dangerous roads and unpredictable drivers.

Residents now ask: how many lives will it take before the taxi industry is held accountable?
